Escape from Tarkov: Story Overview, Ending Details, and the Story After the Ending (Expected Storyline After the Ending)

With the official Version 1.0 release on November 25, 2025, the Tarkov story mode was added, allowing players to finally experience the conclusion of the storyline unfolding within the city of Tarkov.

The story of Escape from Tarkov, which continues from the earlier title Contract Wars, ultimately branches into four different narrative routes.

A short summary of the Tarkov story prior to the ending (click to expand)

 Contract Wars

  • The setting is the fictional Russian city of Tarkov.

  • A multinational corporation, TerraGroup, conducts secret research and illegal experiments.

  • Internal leaks and failed cover-ups push the city into chaos.

  • To contain the situation and protect their interests, two private military companies (PMCs) are deployed.

    • USEC: A Western-backed PMC tasked with protecting TerraGroup.

    • BEAR: A Russian government–aligned PMC aiming to uncover evidence of TerraGroup’s illegal activities.

  • The two sides enter a “contract war,” fighting under competing interests and contracts.

  • Civilian casualties rise, law and order collapse, and the city begins to fall apart.

👉 This marks the beginning of Tarkov’s collapse.

Escape from Tarkov

  • Tarkov becomes a sealed-off city, completely cut off from the outside world.

  • PMCs, Scavs, remnants of military forces, and criminal groups are all mixed together in a brutal fight for survival.

  • The player takes the role of a PMC operative, either USEC or BEAR.

  • Investigating TerraGroup’s facilities, traces of experiments, and attempts at covering up the truth

  • TerraGroup is far more than a normal corporation and is involved in highly dangerous research.

  • The PMCs are essentially abandoned and expendable assets.

  • A massive explosion occurred in the city, leaving Tarkov’s urban area completely devastated. Some of the survivors who witnessed the blast began to speak of a “blue flame,” which certain players speculate may have been an EMP-like event.

After witnessing this phenomenon, a portion of the survivors developed an apocalyptic, fanatical belief system, eventually forming a cult-like religion. In-game, these individuals appear as a hostile faction known as the Cultists

  • Later, through certain ending routes, you will come to realize that the Cultists are not merely a simple doomsday cult born from the apocalypse.

Quest storyline - Labyrinth
Through the Labyrinth storyline, you infiltrate the maze-like facility and uncover what happened between TerraGroup and BEAR.

As you progress through the “Labyrinth” quest in the storyline, you begin to understand, at least in broad terms, what kind of experiments TerraGroup was conducting. The stimulants you use in-game are dangerous substances developed by TerraGroup, and the company carried out various drug experiments on the residents of Tarkov.

At one point, a BEAR unit entered the experimental facility, but while being pursued, a researcher there—who is later found dead—released the civilians held in quarantine. These civilians then turned on the BEAR operatives, ultimately wiping out the entire unit.

The enhanced Scavs found inside the Labyrinth, accessible with the Knossos_LLC_facility_key, are those same experimented-on civilians who have since armed themselves.

The goal of the game is to uncover TerraGroup’s many crimes and hidden conspiracies, and ultimately escape from Tarkov.

The minor quest guides and detailed explanations circulating online are most reliable when verified against information from the official website.
When considering all four endings collectively, it is highly likely that many of Tarkov’s NPCs do not survive beyond the post-ending timeline.

You escaped from Tarkov,
but you did not escape from yourself.

You came close to the truth,
but stopped—out of fear, disguised as caution.
Kerman (Lightkeeper) will remember you as someone who could not be trusted.

Everything you uncovered was buried in the noise,
and TerraGroup emerged stronger than ever.
And now, you are left as
a mercenary without honor,
living under the weight of guilt and debt.

You escaped,
but you did not truly leave.
You got out of Tarkov,
yet you could not run from yourself.

While the PMC is resting inside a warship, an unidentified individual appears before him.

The man is a bald, armed operator, wearing equipment similar to that of the Black Division previously encountered.
He identifies himself as someone from the Lighthouse and checks the PMC’s condition.
He demonstrates precise knowledge of Tarkov’s imminent destruction plan.

Saying that he has no time to deal with you, the operator swiftly overpowers the protagonist and knocks him unconscious.
Some time later, the PMC wakes up aboard a small boat, where a document containing Lightkeeper’s next orders has been left behind.

You did not trust him. Suspicion felt like a safeguard to you, yet at its core was only fear.

Tarkov had fallen, but that was merely the prologue to disaster. From every corner of the world came reports: people massively losing their minds, fading within weeks. No one understood the nature of this affliction, yet every new madness echoed the weight of your choice.

Upon the ruins of chaos, TerraGroup rose as a false savior. And yet, it was they who had birthed this catastrophe. You, too, became one of those who lent strength to their ascent.

You believed that caution would keep you safe, but your escape only led to a fall—into the darkness, with no hope of return.

In this ending, the protagonist survives, but TerraGroup’s secrets remain buried, foreshadowing a future in which the consequences of TerraGroup’s actions plunge the world into further chaos.

You ran for the sake of survival. You chose the path of a runaway, not a seeker of truth. You thought all would end once you left the cursed city, but behind you, Tarkov erupted in flames.

You never saw the whole picture. Never realized that your step was a link in the chain that doomed the city.

And in that moment, while the ashes had yet to settle, TerraGroup rose from the ruins — as if they had awaited this very hour. The world fell to its knees before them, and you were left with nothing. Alive, yet hollow. Saved, yet branded by guilt.

You survived. But at what cost?

After enduring immense hardship and paying a heavy price, you finally escape the city of Tarkov.
However, TerraGroup, determined to prevent Tarkov’s secrets from ever being exposed, attempts to eliminate all evidence by killing everyone involved including you.
The boat comes under attack from a private military aircraft operated by TerraGroup.
A soldier traveling with you, wounded, calls out for your help; but after witnessing a nuclear explosion erupt in the heart of the city, you abandon the soldier and retreat into the boat in a desperate attempt to survive.

You placed your trust in Kerman — and that step was far beyond the mere instinct to survive. The strike against TerraGroup tore apart their veil of deceit: secrets were laid bare, corrupt politicians lost their power, and humanity woke up. The world cast off its chains and, for the first time, breathed free of TerraGroup’s control — realizing it could live differently and halt its own descent into ruin.

This is the brightest ending.
You board an escape vessel with the goal of exposing TerraGroup’s crimes.
TerraGroup-bribed officer attempts to assassinate you, but soldiers who had prior intelligence about the assassination quickly intervene, subdue the attackers, and save you.

Soon after, TerraGroup launches a bombardment on the city of Tarkov.
You and the soldiers narrowly evade the attack, and with a sense of relief, leave Tarkov behind.

Expected Storyline After the Ending

Russia 2028, a project that Escape from Tarkov creator Nikita originally wanted to develop, is not currently in active development, but it is widely expected to follow the storyline established in Escape from Tarkov—much like how Escape from Tarkov itself followed the narrative of Contract Wars.

In other words, the most likely narrative progression is:
Contract Wars → Escape from Tarkov → Russia 2028.

Looking at the background setting of Russia 2028:

  • Era: Near future, the year 2028

  • National situation: Russia is effectively in a state of national collapse

  • Central government: Has lost functionality and control

Regional conditions

  • Remnants of the regular military: With the chain of command broken, units focus on survival or localized defense

  • PMCs (Private Military Companies): Take control of force and interests in place of the state

  • Warlords: Armed groups that exercise de facto control over specific regions

  • Criminal organizations: Expand the chaos through weapons, resource, and human trafficking

  • Religious and ideological groups: Gain influence by rallying around apocalyptic beliefs and rigid ideologies

All of these factions are entangled with one another, resulting in an ongoing low-intensity civil conflict rather than a full-scale war.

The setting of the sequel is therefore likely to shift away from a single city like Tarkov, toward Russia as a whole—collapsed on a national scale.

Tarkov map

Considering that all four endings depict Tarkov being subjected to either nuclear detonations or heavy bombardment, and taking into account the expected sequel Russia 2028, it is highly likely that Escape from Tarkov concludes with a bleak and catastrophic outcome.

Based on this, there is a very high probability that a nuclear explosion occurred at the center of Tarkov. As a result, characters who were most likely residing within or near the city—such as Therapist, who is implied to operate inside Tarkov, and Jaeger, who is located in Woods, a region geographically close to the city—were most likely killed.

It is highly likely that Prapor, Skier, Ragman, and Mechanic, who were located close to the probable blast zones, either suffered critical injuries or were killed.

Of course, this remains purely speculative. Prapor, for instance, might have been safe, as he is often implied to be inside a bunker or a reinforced building, spending his time at a computer or listening to music.😂 That said, please don’t take this too seriously.
