[I am going to lose my wife twice. Once in the hospital, and once in court.]
There is a married couple.
The wife has an incurable illness, and there is a high chance she will die during surgery. The husband does not want to lose her, and the wife also wants to remain with him even after death. So the two of them sign a contract with a company.
The company possesses a technology that can transfer a person’s self, personality, or something close to their soul into a virtual-world server at the moment of death. If the transfer succeeds, the body may die, but the consciousness can continue living in the virtual world. The husband would then be able to access the server and meet his wife again.
On the day of the surgery, the wife’s heart stops. The medical team confirms her death, and according to the contract, the company transfers her original self into the virtual world.
The wife wakes up in the virtual world. To her, it does not feel as if she has truly died. She remembers closing her eyes on the operating table, and then immediately opening them in a new world. She believes that she is still the husband’s wife, and that her life has continued.
And in this story, the true wife is the one who was transferred into the virtual world.
She is not simply a copy. She is the original self that continued right up to the moment of death, the true consciousness of the wife the husband loved.
But a few hours later, the wife’s body, which had died in the real world, miraculously comes back to life.
The woman who wakes up in the hospital bed recognizes her husband and believes she has returned alive. She has the same face, the same body, the same memories, and the same way of speaking. She remembers all the time she spent with her husband.
But she is not the original wife.
The original self has already been transferred into the virtual world, and inside the resurrected body, another newly formed self has awakened. This new self has the same body and memories as the original wife, but she is not the continuation of the wife the husband loved.
The husband is caught between two wives.
The wife in the virtual world is the true wife. Her consciousness continued beyond the moment of death, and she still carries her love for her husband.
The wife in the real world is a new self with the same body. She also loves the husband and possesses all the memories and emotions connected to him, but she is a newly born being inside the body that the original self has already left behind.
However, the moment the real-world wife comes back to life, the law judges the woman in the virtual world to be an illegal duplicate personality. A single legal person can only have one recognized identity, and as long as the living body exists, the personality inside the server cannot be acknowledged.
So the law tries to erase the woman in the virtual world.
When the husband connects to the virtual world, he meets the true wife whose consciousness continued after death.
When he returns to reality, the new self who awakened inside his wife’s resurrected body is waiting for him.
But now the wife in the virtual world has become a legal target for removal.
She is truly the original wife the husband loved, but the law of the real world does not recognize her as a person.
The husband tried not to lose his wife, but in the end, he is forced to face two women.
One is the true wife whose original soul has continued.
The other is another self of his wife, newly born inside the resurrected body.
And the law is trying to delete the server where the true wife exists.
Theme
This story is about the collision between selfhood, the soul, love, and legal identity.
The husband transfers his wife’s self into a virtual world because he does not want to lose her.
And the true wife’s consciousness really does continue inside the server.
But then her body in the real world comes back to life.
That is where the problem begins.
The real-world wife has the same face, the same body, the same memories, and she loves the husband.
But in this setting, she is not the continuation of the original wife. She is a newly formed self inside the resurrected body.
This is a story about the true wife being legally treated as a fake and placed in danger of deletion.
It will also deal with the triangular relationship between the husband, the wife whose consciousness exists in the virtual world, and the wife whose new self has formed inside the revived body.
Story Analysis
Protagonist: The husband
The wife inside the server survives, but only because the wife with the resurrected body gives up her own life.
Because of that, the husband can no longer feel completely happy even when he meets the wife inside the server.
The wife whose mind was transferred into the virtual world:
The wife whose body came back to life and formed a new self:
She may become the most tragic character in the story.
In the middle of the story, the wife in the resurrected body eventually realizes:
“I am a new person with his wife’s body and memories. But the woman inside the server is truly the one who continued from the moment before death.”
So even though she is legally in the protected position, she testifies that the wife inside the server should not be erased.
She defines herself as fake, and at the same time, she becomes the most human character in the story.
The Company
The company tries to make it look as if the wife inside the server chooses deletion voluntarily.
The company’s goal is not forced deletion, but a death that appears to be based on voluntary consent.
In other words, the company wants the situation to look like this:
“The wife inside the server accepted that her existence was causing pain to her husband and to the wife in the real world, and she chose to terminate herself.”
This would allow the company to avoid responsibility. Their official statement would probably be something like this:
“We respected the customer’s right to self-determination.”
“After sufficient counseling and reflection, the personality in question voluntarily chose permanent termination.”
“There was no forced deletion.”
So the company attempts to implant a personality-altering virus into her mind, disguised as an “emotional stabilization patch.”
But her companions inside the virtual world try to save her.
The Court
From the court’s perspective, the judgment would be something like this:
“The defendant is merely suffering from confusion about her own identity. Legally, she is the same person who died and was later resuscitated.”
In other words, even if she declares herself to be fake, the law tries to protect her instead.
The law may interpret her words not as a philosophical truth, but as mental confusion, post-traumatic symptoms, manipulation by the company’s technology, or influence from her husband and the company.
Another Possible Ending Line
The court recognizes the wife with the resurrected body as the real wife.
After the wife with the resurrected body becomes legally recognized as the real person, she “inherits” the wife inside the server.
This gives her legal authority over the wife inside the server.
The company tries to delete the server wife, but the resurrected wife, now legally recognized as the real wife, says:
